It has been announced that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will make an appearance in Southeast Asia this week, for a series of meetings aimed at deepening Canada’s presence in the Indo-Pacific. The trip will commence with a visit to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh, where Trudeau will take part in an hour-long commemoration of Canada’s 45 years of ties with the ASEAN bloc, including heads of government and state. After attending the ASEAN Summit in Cambodia, Trudeau will travel to Bali, Indonesia, for the G20 summit – a meeting of the world’s largest economies. Trudeau will then go to Bangkok, Thailand, to meet with leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation group. Trudeau will be accompanied by Canada’s Trade Minister Mary Ng, for a portion of the 10-day trip.
CABC President Wayne Farmer was quoted in the National Post article, stating that the visit
“gives Ottawa an edge when many countries are jockeying for deeper ties in the region.”
